Each Vintage of The Absconder is made from a selection of exceptional McLaren Vale Grenache vineyards. In 2025 two old bush vine vineyards made it through rigorous classification tastings. A bush vine site in Whites Valley, planted in 1960 on red-brown loam and a small parcel from the Blagrove vineyard in the heart of McLaren Vale on alluvial clay-loam soils. Both parcels were vinified separately in open fermenters with some whole bunch and extended time on skins. 

This wine is named after Wirra Wirra’s founder Robert Wigley who was involved in the ‘acquisition’ of the famous Adelaide pie-cart. This was the catalyst for him to abscond to McLaren Vale in the late 1800’s. Winemaking was Wigley’s calling and by the turn of the century Wirra Wirra had earned a reputation for making world class wines.

Floral and perfumed with ripe strawberry, rosewater and raspberry, layered with thyme, earthy nutmeg and clove spice.
Palate
Morello cherries and cranberries flow on the palate with hints of clove and truffle. A brush of fine, sandy tannins leads to a lingering, elegant finish.
Food Match
Whole snapper with fennel and vadouvan velouté.
